Race Day and Iceland Outfits

half marathon

Well, there you have it — half marathon completed! Saturday was a day I’d been waiting anxiously for, and it finally happened. I have to say, I am both proud and especially surprised. As a first-time half marathon runner, I ran the entire time. As someone who is not a runner. I only stopped for water and tried to do it how the experts do — by tossing back the cup and throwing it into the trash while still running. Ha! I felt incredibly accomplished. My final time was 2:10, just under a 10 minute mile.

I thought I’d be done after one half-marathon, but now I’m feeling addicted… The adrenaline, the competition, and the experience with friends was so wonderful and invigorating. Plus I keep thinking, “if I did better than I thought I’d do my first time, I wonder how fast I’ll be if I do it again?” I’ve already been speaking with a friend about signing up for another one in the Fall.

Until then, though, I’ll be returning to the classes I’ve been missing while training: Yoga, Pilates, Spinning, and the occasional Zumba.

Iceland is on the mind!

I spent yesterday looking for a rain coat and hiking shoes for glacier climbing (yes, glacier climbing — very exciting)!

Iceland outfit ideas:

My goal is to look stylish while doing things like glacier-climbing, hiking, trecking through snow … hopefully that isn’t too much to ask.

Well, maybe some of these will be inspirations for our days in Reykjavik where no outdoor activities will be involved.

My sister, cousin and I have decided to travel together once a year, and this will be our second trip (for the first, they visited me while I studied abroad in Valencia, Spain — my favorite place in the world). I absolutely cannot wait to share this experience with them.

Iceland, here we come!

Essentials (and Stylish Must-Haves) for a Half Marathon

Today is my first-ever half marathon, and I am both nervous and incredibly excited! It’s not something I ever thought I’d do — not because I didn’t think I could, but because I never had the desire.

One day in December, however, I found myself clicking through the details of the D.C. Rock ‘N’ Roll Half Marathon. It was right before the holidays, and I’d let myself get out of shape. The next thing you knew, my submission was in and I was registered. Part of the pre moment was, “register before you change your mind — hurry!” and the post was, “what did I just do???!” But either way, it was happening.

I scheduled this post to go out during my run, so by the time you read this, I’ll be in the middle of it … or I’ll have finished! My goal is simply to finish and prove to myself I can complete it.

I’ve compiled a list of essentials that have greatly helped me during my training. I learned the hard way and arrived at what I’d decided my necessities were over the course of my training… I hope you find them helpful!

lululemon head pieces

{I did a lot of training in the cold. I don’t know about you, but after awhile the wind would affect my ears, eventually giving me a painful headache. This adorable headband from Lululemon was incredibly helpful, to say the least}

iphone headphones

{You should buy running gear you’re excited about. I love the iphone headphones designs Target has!}

cute running tops

{Getting tops specifically made for running is really important. My t-shirts are worn and frumpy — running tops are much more breathable and comfortable, like this one from Dick’s Sporting Goods}

lululemon running jacket

{Running jackets have come in handy for me as well, especially since I’ve been running in January/February. This adorable one is from Lululemon}

And last but not least, be careful and get help choosing your running shoes. I went to a sporting goods store where they sized me and watched me run to make sure my shoes were right for my feet. Remember, you’re investing in your health… it’s less money and pain than a running injury, and most sporting goods stores do the sizing process for free!

There are also some great deals on running clothes at Old Navy right now. Happy shopping!

What are some of your running must-haves? Do you have a favorite song you like to listen to? I’d love to know!
